The history of the Alqueria dates back to the 11th century. Being far from the centre protected by the walls of Burriana, this type of farmhouses needed a certain fortification and defence, and were also used for surveillance thanks to the existence of watchtowers, such as the Calatrava Tower, which owes its name to King James I when he donated it to the Calatrava order.
Nowadays the Alquería Calatrava is a charming hotel in “Bed & Breakfast” format with 7 rooms, where you can observe the passing of the centuries thanks to its perfect conservation.
In its latest refurbishment, the noble materials have been respected in warm tones, enhancing the natural light. The play of colours is based on subtle touches of period tapestries with geometric and picturesque motifs in velvets and silks. The woodwork is present in details such as the doors and the walls with the original exposed stone, further highlighting the essence of the “Valencian palace”.
The atmosphere of the period is respected with a palatial decoration typical of the alquerías of the time. The bathrooms, although renovated, give a glimpse of the hydraulic floors, the antique motifs and the timeless but elegant details. The stone, the curlicue and the wood blend in such a way that the classical concept with a touch of modernity can be breathed, which allows this space to be enjoyed today.
The Calatrava Tower is the oldest defensive tower in the whole of Burriana and one of the best preserved to this day.
The square tower (3.85 metres on each side) is almost 17 metres high and has four levels. The first two levels are accessed by a staircase made of masonry with a false vault as a roof, while the upper floors are reached by a ladder.
The construction system is simple, consisting of masonry, brick and ashlar.
The Alquería has more than 10.000 m² in which, apart from the main room, you can enjoy orange and fruit trees, gardens preserved down to the smallest detail, swimming pool, outdoor porch, barbecue, as well as historical remains from the 11th century for the delight of the guests.
Inside we find different rooms for weddings and events and the outside porch, with the gardens, offer a multitude of possibilities for the organisation of private and corporate events.
